Nieuw Graadmeter Rapport Stormvogels
Jaarlijks onderzoekt IMARES de maaginhoud van langs de Nederlandse kust dood gevonden Noordse Stormvogels. Deze zeevogels eten per ongeluk ook plastic afval. De hoeveelheid plastic in de magen vormt een goede graadmeter van de hoeveelheid zwerfvuil op de Noordzee. Het onderzoek en de jaarlijkse rapportage wordt uitgevoerd voor het Ministerie van Verkeer en Waterstaat, die de gegevens gebruikt om te bezien of het beleid voor afvalafgifte door schepen in havens voldoende effectief is. De nu tot 2008 bijgewerkte gegevens laten over de laatste jaren helaas geen verbetering zien.
New Fulmar Monitoring Report
Each year, IMARES investigates stomach contents of Northern Fulmars beached in the Netherlands. These seabirds accidentally ingest plastic debris. The abundance of plastic in the stomachs is a useful monitoring tool for the amount of marine litter in the North Sea. The research and annual reports are commissioned by the Netherlands Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Watermanagement, which uses the data to evaluate if policies for waste disposal by ships in harbours are sufficiently effective. The data, now updated to year 2008 unfortunately do not show improvement in recent years.
