Dutch Seabird Group

The DUTCH SEABIRD GROUP (Nederlandse ZeevogelGroep - NZG) is a section of the Netherlands Ornithological Society (Nederlandse Ornithologische Unie - NOU). A number of NZG-working groups is involved in different areas of seabird study such as the Beached Bird Survey group (NSO), the Coastal Seawatching group (CvZ), the Offshore and the Breeding Bird group.

The Dutch Seabird Group aims to be a bonding mechanism between amateur and professional seabird researchers nationally and internationally and strives to disseminate seabird information to non-governmental groups and policy makers that are dealing with the marine environment. To achieve such aims, the Dutch Seabird Group publishes the journal SULA and contributes to the organisation of workshops and symposia.

SULA is a Dutch language journal, but all papers have an English summary and captions to tables and figures. During the years 1999-2006, SULA was replaced by the combination of Atlantic Seabirds, a joint English language journal of the Dutch and British Seabirds Groups, and a Dutch companion newsletter titled Nieuwsbrief NZG. In 2008, the NZG returned to publishing SULA, which started with volume number 21 to emphasize that it follows 12 earlier volumes of SULA and 8 volumes of Atlantic Seabirds plus Nieuwsbrief.
MARINE ORNITHOLOGY
Internationally the NZG participates in the seabird journal 'Marine Ornithology' on which is freely available on the internet: www.marineornithology.org.
Back issues
Back-issues of Atlantic Seabirds are available to members as long as stocks last. Charges are € 4.25 per issue, with reduced prices for larger orders. Please contact for details.
Journal exchange
The Dutch Seabird Group aims to stimulate international information exchange through publication exchange with other seabird groups or journals sufficiently oriented on seabirds or the marine environment. For exchange proposals please contact .

Working Groups
BEACHED BIRD SURVEYS.
The Working group on Beached Bird Surveys (Nederlands Stookolieslachtoffer onderzoek -NSO) co-ordinates regular beached bird surveys in the Netherlands since the 1970's, but the database contains additional much older data. The database is used for research and policy reports on trends in oil pollution off the Dutch coast. For detailed information about the NSO visit the NZG/NSO-site.
NSO-coordinator: Kees Camphuysen.

COASTAL SEA WATCHING
The Coastal Seawatching Group (Club van Zeetrekwaarnemers - CvZ) co-ordinates counts along the Dutch coast and holds the database of hourly counts since 1972. As such, also this database is an importance source of information for science and policy, increasingly suitable to follow long-term changes in avifauna migrating along the Dutch coast. For the best information about the CvZ go to the NZG/CvZ-site.
CvZ-coordinator: Steve Geelhoed.

The Working Group Offshore has been active in co-ordinating volunteer assistance in marine science projects in the North Sea. Currently only professional members are participating in various projects and are on the look-out for opportunities for NZG contributions.

The Working Group Breeding Seabirds has started to organize diet studies of gulls breeding on Texel (from samples regurgitated during ringing). Standard counts for data on distribution and abundance of Dutch seabirds are co-ordinated by SOVON. The Breeding Seabirds group aims to promote activities on seabirds not covered by other organizations.

Marine Mammal Database.
In addition to the seabird activities, the NZG is involved in maintaining records of sightings and stranding of marine mammals. NZG Marine Mammal Database
Database-coordinator: Kees Camphuysen.
